Abstract/Summary:
The ever-changing science and technology bring convenience to people’s lives, but also bring many problems. The controversial issues caused by the development and application of science and technology to the society are collectively referred to as "Socio-scientific issues",or SSI for short. The teaching of social science issues in the education sector is collectively referred to as SSI teaching.Carrying out SSI teaching can not only deepen students’ understanding of scientific knowledge, social relations of science and technology, and nature of science, but also cultivate their ability of scientific inquiry and informal reasoning, and help students to form good moral quality, emotional attitude and values, and enhance their sense of social responsibility. In China, science textbooks are an important carrier of SSI teaching. In this study,the2004 and 2019 PEP senior high school textbooks of biology, chemistry and physics were used as the research carrier, and the related contents of social science topics in science textbooks were analyzed, including the number, column design, category and presentation of social science topics. It is found that, from the overall perspective, the development of social science topics in high school science textbooks of China’s People’s Education Edition in the new century presents the characteristics of "quantity improvement and quality balance".The number of topics in the new edition of science textbooks is obviously increased compared with that in the old edition, but there is little difference between the two editions in terms of topic categories and presentation methods, and the quality of topic writing is slowly improved. From the perspective of different subjects, the inter-disciplinary differences of social science topics in science textbooks are mainly reflected in the number of topics and column setting: in quantity, biology textbooks are the most, followed by chemistry textbooks, and physics textbooks are the least; In terms of column setting, biology textbooks set up special chapters for specific topics, while physics and chemistry textbooks did not.Based on the research results of whole and sub-subjects,this paper summarizes the reasons for the overall development of social science topics in science textbooks in China in the new century, which mainly include three aspects: globalization giving birth to SSI,the need to implement the core literacy of subjects, and the importance attached to SSI research by education circles. There are two main reasons for the inter-disciplinary differences of social science issues in science textbooks: the attributes of the disciplines themselves and the research preference of discipline education. On this basis,a model of influencing factors of social science issues in science textbooks is constructed. Finally, some suggestions on the compilation of social science topics in science textbooks in China in the future are put forward: the topics in each textbook are few and precise;Topic selection highlights localization; The presentation of topics is more in line with SSI teaching mode;Based on STS,beyond STS.
