In 2011, the Ministry of Education formally promulgated The Foundation Education Course Reform Outline which explicitly pointed out the goal and the overall framework of curriculum reform of elementary English education. This move defined the dual nature of English course, which includes instrumental and humanism. It also reflected the significance which elementary English education curriculum reform has brought to the national development and students’development. The course reform adhered to the students-oriented education concept and paid attention to their individual differences. On the learning methods, the reform paid attention to the practicality and applicability of language learning. It emphasized that teachers should create a meaningful context for students to study and use English. Foreign language education changes from emphasizing on imparting language knowledge to attaching importance to the cultivation of students’comprehensive language using ability. The process of learning a foreign language is no longer a dull reciting and memory experience, but a process of proactive, continuously improving the language using ability and humanity cultivation manners. Junior middle school English classroom teaching is a process of imparting knowledge traditionally. Many students lack self-confidence and initiative, many teachers follow the traditional cramming teaching mode. Teachers’and students’common purpose is restricted to cope with the examination. In order to resist this authority some of the students even stand opposite to the teachers. In order to improve this situation, this study tries to apply appreciation education into the classroom teaching. Appreciation education enlarges students’ advantages and strong points, respects their individual differences and encourages them to be better themselves. Appreciation education requires teachers to view each student’s progress with admiration, praise the students’every good manner by using words.As a kind of scientific education idea, appreciation education is helpful to promote the development of quality education. In the process of the investigations and the application of appreciation education, the research adopts both quantitative and qualitative research methods. First of all, a survey is carried out to know about the present situation of appreciation education implemented in junior middle school English classroom teaching. The survey objects are 20 English teachers and 320 students from Shihe Junior Middle School. Secondly, based on the result of the survey, this study tries to apply appreciation education into specific classroom teaching process. The research objects are students in Grade 8 from Shihe Junior Middle School and the experimental time lasts for one semester. In the process of the research, the emotional factors are tested by using questionnaires before and after the experiment. Emotional factors here mainly include the students’interest and motivation, confidence and the relationship between teachers and students. The test scores before experiment and at the end of the experiment are analyzed by SPSS 19.0. The experimental results show that the appreciation education has an important influence on junior middle school students’mental development, especially in the interest, motivation, self-esteem and so on. It also has obviously improved the relationship between teachers and students. At the same time, students’English English academic performance has been improved to some degrees. Because the experimental sample is small and the experiment time is short, so whether appreciation education is applicable to other grades and areas remains to be further tested.
