As one of the important carriers of knowledge, teaching materials can provide systematic knowledge for students, and they are one of the essential tools used in students’study; meanwhile, teaching materials are the main reference for teachers’ teaching activities as they can provide original ideas to help teachers present the teaching contents well and achieve the best teaching effects. Thus, a good series of teaching materials plays an essential role in successful teaching. Meanwhile, the evaluation and analysis work is necessary for the improvement of teaching materials. Therefore, coursebook evaluation is important for successful learning as well as teaching.By the analysis of the achievements made by scholars at home and abroad, the author found that their achievements were very comprehensive and systematic. They made tremendous theory foundation for the later researches in this field. However, a noteworthy limitation is that quantitative research method is seldom used in textbook evaluation. Nowadays, high school English teaching materials which are used in our country mainly include New Senior English Book for China, New Standard English, Oxford English and the other several sets of materials. Each set of textbook has its advantages while its disadvantages can not be ignored. The aim of this paper is to make an evaluation of the New Senior English Book for China published in2003(NSEFC2003) by analyzing its use condition among students and teachers so as to find out its advantages and disadvantages as well as problems teachers and students meet and then provide helpful opinions and suggestions for textbook writers and policy makers and teachers. The research methods used in this research are a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, which include the interview and questionnaire. The participants of questionnaire are110students and17teachers from Linshu No.1High School in Linyi county, Shandong province, and the participants of interview are7teachers selected from the17teacher respondents. The following are the research questions:(1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of NSEFC2003according to students’and teachers’opinions?(2) What are the problems that teachers and students meet during the use of NSEFC2003?The results show that NSEFC2003has lots of advantages, such as the emphasis on students’integrated skills and the variety in topics and so on. However, lots of disadvantages and problems are also identified, such as the large capacity, the lack of pronunciation knowledge and the high difficulty degree, etc. This is because the target students of NSEFC2003are students from cities whose English level is much higher than students in the research who are from a small and less developed county. As a result, NSEFC2003can not match the special teaching situation in this area very well. The author will provide some implications for textbook writers and policy makers as well as teachers according to the research results.
