“Patriotic” has appeared in Chinese historical documents for a long time, and it’s still the important content of the socialism core values. Patriotic education as the enormous spiritual strength of national prosperity which is throughout every periods of history textbooks. As a historical category, patriotism has different connotations in different periods.First of all, this article sorts the content of patriotic education of the primary and middle school history textbooks in three stages which are the end of Qing dynasty, the Republic of China, and after the founding of new China. It summarizes the characteristics of patriotism in each historical period, and analyzes its reasons one by one. On the basis of this, it gets the conclusion that the patriotic education of the one-hundred-year in history textbooks has five characteristics: first, the patriotic education runs through in every historical period, and it is deeply affected by the era background and the class ruling; second, the long history and culture of Chinese nation, as well as the spirit of defending national sovereignty and revolting national oppression, are the important content of patriotic education all the time; third, the connotation of patriotism is getting more and more plentiful; fourth, the content of patriotic education is tending to be objective and rational; fifth, the content of patriotism emerges the features of omitting ancient times and detailing today.Finally, based on the macro-grasp of the one-hundred-year’s history textbooks of primary and secondary schools, this article puts forward four suggestions for the compiling of the history textbooks in the future: first, the content of patriotic education must be objective and rational, and during the process of compiling textbooks, it must implement “conclusions come out of the history”; second, the patriotic education should embody its levels, and take reader’s ability of cognition and acceptance into full consideration; third, the content of patriotic education should pay attention to the combination of national curriculum and local textbooks; fourth, the content of patriotic education should keep pace with the times and the world tide.
