Vocabulary learning is one of the main parts of primary school English study. New curriculum standard of English has indicated that the primary student should master 600 to 700 words involved in 15 topics, requiring clear pronunciation,correct spelling and understanding as well as usage.In the view of the significance of vocabulary, it is indispensable to explore the effective learning method. In recent years, more and more scholars, teachers and linguists pay attention to the phonics. The phonics is a kind of teaching method which enables students to recognize the 26 alphabetical name sound and pronunciation by natural memorial way and helps students establish the instinct sound sensation according to the pronunciation of alphabet and alphabetical combination. The characteristics of phonic are as follows. Firstly, the words’ pronunciation is consistent with its shape, which makes the vocabulary learning simpler. Secondly, it can utilize the positive transfer of Pinyin. Besides, it fits the learning habit of primary student. Applying phonics in primary school English teaching could promote students’ ability of spelling and pronouncing, enhance students’ independence of studying English and most importantly stimulate students’ interest of learning English.However, at present, there are some problems of phonics in practical teaching. For example, teachers lack the correct understanding of phonics and some of them copy others’ experience without consideration. Some even pay no attention to the consistency and systematicness during teaching. All of these can give rise to the unsatisfied effect of the application. To solve the existing problems, teachers should improve their professional standards, strengthen their understanding of phonics, emphasize the order of teaching, deeply understand and implement the new curriculum standard and pay attention to cultivate students’ interest.The dissertation is based on phonics application in primary school, anal sizing the existing problems of phonics practical application, and trying to provide some strategies to optimize the phonics teaching through questionnaire survey, interview, classroom observation and case analysis.
