As 2014 marks the 10 th anniversary of the foundation of the Confucius Institute, the “Chinese Heat” keeps becoming more and more popular with Chinese learners everywhere in the world. In recent years, Chinese teaching has made extraordinary progress in Chile. Since the Chilean Education Department made Chinese as one of the second language elective courses in secondary education, many middle schools have started to offer Chinese courses, as well, with much success as those students who have become fond of the Chinese language. Based on the author’s one-year practical teaching experience in Liceo Polivalente de San Nicolas, this research makes a deep analysis on the first-hand information conducted by questionnaires and personal interviews. The study not only points towards the disadvantages in Chinese teaching from four aspects: Chinese teachers, Chinese textbooks, the students and the overall curriculum, but also gives related suggestions to help in developing better ways for Chinese teaching. The research is divided into six chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the background and the significance of this research. Chapter two focuses on Chinese teaching in Chile, which concentrates on the Chilean education system and makes a review of Chinese teaching in Chile. The third chapter’s main idea is on the Chinese teaching status in Liceo Polivalente de San Nicolas, while making a detailed analysis of the questionnaire. Chapter four emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese teaching in this school, and Chapter five comes up with the suggestions on how to solve the problems mentioned in the chapter four. The final chapter makes a general conclusion and gives some aspects on what should be improved in the research.
