| Since 1950s, there were some schools in Australia beginning to open the Chinese courses and teaching Chinese as a second language was rising.But Chinese-teaching was a new trade that hadn’t been developing until 1980s which was after Reform and Opening. With the advancement of China’s international status and the improvement of commercial relations between China and Australia in recent years, Chinese has attracted increasing attention in Australia. Especially from 18th November,2014,the president Xi Jinping Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan,visited Tasmania in Australia and Met 16 primary school students who are Year Five students at Scotch Oakburn Junior School located in Launceston, Tasmania.They wrote a Chinese letter to President Xi with the help of their teacher. President Xi encouraged them to learn Chinese and Chinese culture. However, until now, the research of teaching Chinese, especially Chinese vocabularies, is not quite enough and still wait to develop.Otherwise,it’s hard to deal with the coming craze for Chinese language in Australia.This thesis focus on 104 students who are learning Chinese from Year 7 to Year 10 in"Bendigo South East College"and Chinese assistants coming from 22 public secondary school,combining with the observation of the Chinese vocabulary class of 4 Chinese teachers who come from different countries,language background and education level.The thesis adopts the methods of class observation,interviewing, questionnaire survey and chart analysis to analyze the current situation of teaching Chinese vocabularies in Victoria Australia,concluding that there are four major problems existing in Chinese vocabularies teaching of Victoria public middle school.These four major difficulties are concerning about the Chinese books,teaching methods,language theory and Chinese teaches.According to these four problems, the thesis discusses the factors which are resulting in the teaching embarrassment,including the characteristics of Chinese vocabularies, the education idea of Victoria public Junior school,the outline of language learning,the rule of the middle school students of learning Chinese,the age of students,the status of Chinese in Victoria and the specialty of Chinese teacher in Victoria.Meanwhile,the thesis combines the questioner survey of the students and Chinese assistants with the observation and recording of the four Chinese teachers in "BSE"college to propose the following strategies.Firstly, the Chinese teacher should improve teaching and practicing how to use Chinese vocabularies to express. Secondly, the Chinese teachers should learn how to be a good server in Chinese classes. Thirdly,the teaching methods should accord with the education environment.The thesis insists in the principle of usefulness and practice, with the research of teaching case,the theories and the questioner survey, to conclude a series of teaching Chinese vocabularies strategies which are suitable for the middle school in Australia.The thesis can provide some theoretical and practical value for those Chinese teachers who are in Australia public secondary school. |
