The Licentia Docendi in the Late Middle Ages facilitates the legalization of the University of Paris. The conflicts between corporations of teachers and chancellors of Notre-Dame of the right of conferring the license to teach draw the secular scholars closer together than ever. In this paper, the Licentia Docendi is studied in three periods. Firstly, how can people get the Licentia Docendi before the rise of the University of Paris? Secondly, what does the emergence of the four Nations do to the conferment of license to teach of the University of Paris from the 12th to the middle of the 13th centuries? Thirdly, after the 13th century, what are the changes of the conferment of license to teach of the University of Paris brought by the rise of four Faculties? This paper is divided into four parts. The first chapter mainly studies the importance of the three key factors of conferring the license to teach before the rise of the University of Paris, which are chancellors of Notre-Dame, teachers of the candidates and the fame of scholars, through some discussions of the relationship between the Church and education, the occupational living conditions of scholars and the personal teaching experiences of Pierre Abelard. The second chapter is based on the analyses of the four Nations and the introduction ceremonies of the scholarly guilds, called "inception", showing several fights between the chancellors of Notre-Dame and the academic guilds for the right of granting the teaching license. The third chapter explores the system of Degree-Licentia Docendi of the University of Paris since the different Faculties has been constituted in the middle of the 13th century. The last section of this paper analyzes the enlightenments of the institutions of conferring the license to teach of the University of Paris to the developments of teaching profession and the institutional constructions of itself, as well as the modern universities.
