To take the example of Paris University, this thesis gives a description of the creation of the university autonomy and pays much attention to the relationship between university autonomy and privilege, and between university autonomy and the authority. The creation of autonomy started at the moment of the university's beginning. As the economy and culture revived in the west Europe in the twelfth century, the autonomy structure of Paris was brought up. With the privilege sent by papacy and French royal, the autonomy of Paris got an ascending development in the thirteenth and fourteenth century. But, in the fifteenth century, the privilege experienced comprehensive limits and abolishment. However, the autonomy continued to exist in Paris and it went into the new authoritative system. In conclusion, Paris autonomy came from the privilege and was made by the papal and royal authority in the middle ages. The autonomy was a relative self-government system. For this reason, the university should get a sensible position in the authoritative system. This thesis is composed by three chapters as following:The first chapter comes to introduce the creation of Paris in the twelfth century and its background. With the revival of economy and culture in the Western Europe, the city of Paris became prosperous and the cultural center of Christian world. And then, more and more scholars summoned in Paris. Gradually, these scholars united and made the Paris masters organization. The new organization is the primitive Paris University. The second chapter analyzes that the autonomy developed with the help of papal privilege and royal privilege. In the thirteenth century, the papal sent many privileges to Paris because of Christianity heresy. With the papal decline in the fourteenth century, the French royal paid more and more attention to Paris and continued to send many privileges to Paris. As a result of the privileges, Paris perfected its autonomy structure, made rector's position and built the General Congregations. The third chapter comes to introduce the process of privilege limit ,and also the reason and its effect in the fifteenth century. Because of the promulgation of higher education and the more powerful royal, Paris privilege's experienced limits and abolishment. However, the autonomy of Paris was kept in the new authoritative system.
