| Education must be fun. So it is very important for English teachers to arouse pupils’ interest for English learning. And game teaching method (GTM) can accord with the teaching principles, for the suitable GTM correspond to the features of children’s psychology, applying GTM can not only improve pupils’ability of memory, thought, performance and creativity, but also cultivate pupils’learning habit.On the basis of emotion and interest in the children psychology, this result studies the application of the GTM in the English classroom of primary schools in China. And three questions are proposed:1. What is the general situation of GTM in primary schools?2. How should English teachers of pupils manage classroom game?3. Can GTM improve the pupils’English learning achievement?In order to answer these questions, the author did an experiment in a primary school in Henan province for two and a half months. In this study, the author used two different groups, one was the controlled group taught with the traditional method, the other was the experimental group taught with the GTM. There were70pupils in each group and140pupils in total. During the research process, the researcher did pretest, two posttests and a delayed posttest for each group, made some questionnaires for pupils and interview for English teachers in this school, from which data were collected. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and the SPSS19.0was used to analyze the data.In terms of the general situation of GTM in primary school, the results show that GTM is frequently used by teachers and favored by pupils in English class, but the proportion of interaction between the teacher and pupils was low. Concerning the management of the class games, teachers should deal with this issue from these three aspects:1) types of game,2) the way to choose games, and3) the time to use games. In the aspect of types of games, the result shows that pupils did not like the expanding game, but there is no difference in the likings of the other three types of game (the compelling game, the practicing game and the co-operative game), thus it is better for the teacher to choose the latter three types. And the way to choose games should accord with the pupils’desire to recite texts through games and to listen to English stories. And the suitable time for the teacher to use games is when the teacher teaches new words and texts in class, reviews learned words before class, and when the pupils prefer games. Finally, the research shows that GTM can improve participants’achievement to a certain degree.The author expects that this research can bring about some help and changes to the English teaching method and to the research on the GTM application in primary schools in China. |
