Zhang Zhidong was not only a politician, a militarist, but also an outstanding educatorduring the period of late Qing Dynasty. He played a connecting role in the studying abroadeducation of modern China. At his initiative, lots of learners studied overseas at that time.Zhang continued to improve the thoughts of studying abroad and tried his best to practise it.The thesis mainly analyses the studying abroad practices with the guidance of Zhang’ sthoughts according to his letters and Quan Xue Pian. There are four parts.Part one is about the forming reasons of Zhang’s studying abroad thoughts, which includehistorical background and his positive thoughts. During the later period of Qing Dynasty,China repeated foreign invasions, the society faced severe threats. In order to realize nationalrich and strong, Zhang not only inherited and developed the thought of ‘learning merits fromthe foreign to conquer the foreign’, but also referenced some successful experience. At thesame time, the foreign countries provided advantageous conditions.Part two researches the content of thoughts and practices about studying abroad. Thereare the composition of studying abroad people, country, discipline, funding and so on. Notonly that, he made lots of regulations to manage students studying abroad.Part three sums up.the characters, which includes levels of diversity, systematicmanagement and epochal character. Especially the innovative ideas opened the new pattern ofmodern studying abroad.The last part comprehensively evaluate Zhang’s thoughts and practices about studyingabroad. It not only transformed Chinese knowledge and ideology, but also made acontribution to the modernization of Chinese education.To study Zhang Zhidong’s thoughts and practice not only have theoretical and practicalsignificance to Chinese modern education, but also play the pioneering role to study-tours oftoday’s China. As a excellent minister, Zhang was known as a modern history of politician, astrategist and a industrialist in the late Qing Dynasty. However, he has an important positionin the field of modern China education reform. In my opinion, Zhang made a more importantcontribution to modern Chinese travel education, which shows the influence and pioneeringspirit to the development of Qing Dynasty Chinese society.
