There is a long history of the study of narrative. As a new discipline, narrative inquiry isnot confined to the literary field and presents a trend of interdisciplinary. Narratology wasapplied to pedagogy field in1980s, and educational narrative appeared. Educational narrativemainly focuses on the field of teacher professional development. Drawing on the awareness ofthe importance of narrative, Xiong (2010) proposed a new teaching approach—NarrativeApproach. Different from the previous study, Narrative Approach shifts to the lively teachingprocess and narrative expression of English teaching.Based on the idea, the paper intends to apply the Narrative Approach to the wholeprocess of English teaching and study the effectiveness of narrative approach in Englishteaching through living experiment. As many researches are limited in the theoretical level,there are few researches have been done about the implication of Narrative Approach. On thebasis of presenting the effectiveness from theoretical aspect, this paper explores the feasibilityof the implication of Narrative Approach. The stay point of the experiment is English writing.Through collecting and analyzing their writing scores and the results of questionnaires, thispaper shows whether Narrative Approach can help to improve the students’ writing ability ornot, and whether it can change their attitude towards English learning and English writing ornot.Therefore, this research selects the students in Tai Hang School as research subjects. Thelength of time is about four months. The researcher design the whole teaching process andquestionnaire based on the three teaching models proposed by Xiong. The results of theresearch prove: Narrative Approach can improve the students writing competence and changetheir attitude towards English learning. At the same time, the interpersonal relationshipbetween the teacher and students becomes more harmonious.The research provides an example of using Narrative Approach in the whole process ofEnglish teaching. However, some limitations still exist in this research for the limitation oftime, energy and ability. Therefore, the limitation of this research should be perfect in thefuture study.
