Social adaptation means balance and coordination between individuals and thesocial environment as well as within the individuals when individuals react to andcomply with the social environment effectively. Because of severe mental retardation, physical damage by both nature and nurture, improper family education and socialrejection, severely mentally retarded children’s social adaptive behaviors are pretty poor, mainly manifested in the self-care, physiological needs’ expression and lack of basicbody movement to survive. Therefore, their social adaption situation looks bleak. Inorder to improve social acceptance of severely mentally retarded children, reduce theburden of their family and improve their living situation as well, it’s urgent to do theresearch on how to improve the social adaptability of severely mentally retardedchildren, which will make up for the gap of this research area at the same time. Basedon the former reaches and grounded on the severely mentally retarded children’sactual situation, we summarized that social adaptability consists of physiological needs’expression, self-care and life energy. The question is how to improve the socialadaptability of severely mentally retarded children. According to practical experience,we proposed two training programs including situational experiencing training andhousehold life training method and a single subject design was used to assess theefficiency of the intervention. The behavioral performance of two subjects wererecorded according to self-designed “Severely mentally retarded children’s socialadaptability evaluation sheet” by teaching faculties and life teachers independently. Theresearch demonstrated that two training programs have great effect on the improvementof severely mentally retarded children.
