This study adopted design research methods to explore how to design educational games and how they should be applied in a particular classroomteaching through the partnership with the teacher of Mental Retardation School, which in order to improve the classroom teaching of mentally retarded children and promote their study of Social adaptation Curriculum. The author started the specific research with these problems.Firstly, the author made a thorough understanding and analysis of the social adaptation curriculum in four aspects: course content, teaching principles, teaching strategies and teaching evaluation. By reviewingthe main achievements and important documents of the game design and development at home and abroad,the design process and modes of the games are analyzed and summarized, the form and development tool of the game design were preliminarily determined. Then, according to the game design theory and strategy, the author had carried on the mutual integration of instructional design and game design basing on the analysis of the teaching objectives, course content and learner characteristics.The development of the game prototype also had been completed.After that, the game had been continuously improved in the process of iteration by cooperating with the teachers. Improvements included the game voice, content levels, items, etc.The author studied the role of games in teaching activities and its application in teaching byimplementing specific activities in the classroom.Finally, the evaluation of the game showed that the game had a positive effect, but also many deficiencies. In the end, some suggestions were put forward on the game design and teaching application for the mentally retarded children,which were hoped toprovide references for future research.
