Academy was one kind of education institution besides the official schools inancient China. It is an important branch of the ancient educational system. It wasaffected by both the natural and humanity factors, as made its special spatial-temporalevolution track.The dimension that made the substance include the space and time, traditionalresearches on the academies were weak in data collecting, data analyzing andvisualization of the spatial-temporal evolution of the objects. This paper applies theGIS technologies on integrating and sorting academies and celebrities data to studythe spatial-temporal distribution pattern of the academies from Tang to QingDynasties in Ganpo Area and display the analyzing results. The data that collected toestablish the Ganpo database include local topography, rivers, lakes, ancient andmodern administrative areas, ancient population, ancient roads, ancient cities and thecore data like the time, space and attribute data of the academies and the Jinshi.Based on the database set up using the data, the GIS spatial analysis can beapplied to analyze the academies and Jinshi change over space and time. The resultsof the analysis show that: The mean centers of the established academies in dynastiesmove toward south with time, but they concentrate in the center area of JiangxiProvince. There are academies hotspots in Jizhou, Hongzhou, Raozhou, Fuzhou andXinzhou in different dynasties, and the pattern is consistent with the population. Thestatistics of the academies elevation shows the plain is optimal place for theacademies. Because of the force from Sung Confucian and Buddhism and Taoism andthe exploring of the mountain area, few academies were found in the hilly andmountainous area. But with the intensifying of Officiallized Academy, they becamecloser to the cities and roads which is also lower distance than to the rivers.For Zhu Xi and Wen Tianxiang, their footprints over space concentrate in theirhometown and the academic districts where there always had academies establishedinfluenced by them. The analysis of the comparison between the Jinshi and academiesdistribution shows that the academies should play an important role in the Jinshiraising in Jiangxi.At the end of the study, this paper proposed the framework of the web platformsupports the data browsing, data querying, data editing, data analysis and data visualization functions for the users. The platform opens a new method for sharing thehumanity data, which also helps revising and completing the data for the furtherresearches in the fields. The main questions in the research process are discussed alsoin the end.
