Southeast Asia, sharing mountains, waters, similar culture as well as blood with China, is an important direction of China’s peripheral diplomacy. ASEAN, an increasingly interdependent regional international organization, has growing influence in Asia and the whole world. Asia is a key area of China’s peripheral diplomacy. Therefore, the relationship with ASEAN determines the relations with Asian countries. From the perspective of China’s diplomatic strategic layout, Southeast Asia is the only area that China can exert full diplomatic strategy. ASEAN has a strategic significance to China.Security is the core of International Relations research. Security issues between China and ASEAN are not only one of the core of political science research, but also the hot issues of mutual concern. The end of the cold war did not bring a long-awaited security to the world, on the contrary, some of the security issues buried in the cold war have gradually come out after the cold war, posing new security threats to China and ASEAN countries even the whole world. For instance, the consequences of the financial crisis originated in the Southeast Asia in 1997 was as good as a war; the "9/11 attack occurred in the United States in 2001 has been the worst attack on the American soil in the history; the SARS epidemic began in China in 2003 rattled the whole world, causing unbearable psychological panics; the "Islamic country" arose in the middle east in 2014 aroused the concern of the whole world;...All of these security threats are different from those during the cold war, which were traditional securities with political and military security being the principal, and the connotation and denotation of security have changed. Given the fact that theory and reality require further exploration of security, China has established new security concept.Although the traditional security threats between China and ASEAN has decreased, the non-traditional security threats that affect the stabilities of China and Southeast Asia has increased, for example, pirates in South China Sea, financial crisis, the spread of infectious diseases, and ecological environment problem, etc. It is inevitable to strengthen cooperation between China and ASEAN countries in the field of non-traditional security.Hence, this thesis discusses the theoretical basis of non-traditional security cooperation, distinguishes between traditional security and non-traditional security, explores the main field of non-traditional security, summarizes international experience of non-traditional security threats, clarifies the development of relation between China and ASEAN as well as the cooperation process, analyzes key fields of cooperation in terms of non-traditional security between China and ASEAN countries, and builds cooperation mechanism and approaches of non-traditional security between China and ASEAN countries.
