Translator’s Subjectivity In Literary Translation

Language plays an important role in cultural communication as the carrier of information. Translation, being the bridge in cross-cultural communication, shows its significance in different languages. Literary translation, as one of the translation styles, is regarded as the way that translators use a language to express the thoughts of the original language that the writers adopt. Therefore, it is more important to master the way to translate during the whole process of translating.Translator is the vital element in translating, whose position has been argued for a long time. In the field of traditional translation, they treated translators as servants or pieces of transparent glass. In the middle of last century, people began to pay attention to the transparent glass with the rise of the cultural turn and deconstruction, and they began to realize the importance of translators and their subjectivity in translation. As a result, the translation is extended to the cultural field more than the linguistic view.Translation originates from understanding and the subjectivity of translators plays roles that time letting alone the literary translation. In 1970 s, the Functional School emerged in Germany taking Skopos as its core. The author of the study will research the translator’s subjectivity in literary translation. Skopos holds that any translation has a goal to achieve. With the guidance of skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the author takes the different versions as examples to analyze how the translator’s subjectivity to be achieved by combining comparative analysis with qualitative and quantitative analysis. By researching the subjectivity of the translators, the author hopes to have a better guidance on literary translation and the difficulties in reality so that it can provide with both theory and practice or a new paradigm in literary translation.There are five parts in this study: In chapter one, it states the background and significance of the research. In chapter two, it includes three rules of Skopos and the studies of translator’s subjectivity at home and abroad. In chapter three, how the subjectivity in literary translation to be achieved will be described in details. In chapter four, the two versions of Oliver Twist are taken as examples to be analyzed by means of comparative, qualitative and quantitative analysis. It is the conclusion in chapter five,mainly concluding the findings and limitations of the research, and suggestions of translator’s subjectivity in literary translation.
