A Report On Translation Of Killing Cancer-Not People (excerpts)

This is a report on English-Chinese translation. The source text is taken from Chapters Four and Five of Killing Cancer-Not People by Robert G. Wright. In these two Chapters, the author gives a detailed analysis about cancer patients’ diet and their habits. It is hoped that the translation of these two Chapters can introduce some scientific and healthy anti-cancer diets for those target readers.The source text is characteristic of scientific style, whose linguistic features are inclusive of clarity, accuracy, refinement and rigour. What is more, they carry expressive function, communicative function and vocative function. And it is really a big challenge for the translator to arrive at the conversion of these functions in translation. As is the case with these circumstances, the writer thinks over all kinds of problems that have been encountered in the course of translation, and attempts to work them out by combining some specific translation skills. First of all, on the basis of some guideline and principle of translation, the type of the source text, the target readers, the purpose of translation, etc. have been analyzed in the report. Secondly, the analsis of translation skills frequently employed in translation is done at lexical and sentential levels. In addition to this, explanation and summary are done through exemplifying lexical conversion, lexical extension, voice transformation and reconstruction. At the same time, some guideline and principle relevant to translation are testified. Lastly, so far as translation of some brands is concerned, methods of literal translation, transliteration and the combination of these two strategies are discussed so that some practical and feasible ways to solve these problems have been found.This translation report consists of the following parts. The first part is about task description. It contains the general description of the whole project including background, information, textual type of the source text, and the significance and purpose of this report. The second part is about the preparations, mainly introducing the process of translation. The third part is concerned with the description of the translation process. The fourth part is after-translation reflection. The fifth part discusses some concrete translation strategies. Besides these, methods related to the translation of some brands, which is regarded as an important and difficult component in this translation report, are discussed. The last but not the least part is the conclusion.
