In the era of economic globalization, in order to realize China’s rejuvenation, China has to be confident in culture and be open-minded in learning Western advantages as well as enhance China’s cooperation with the West. History was made by one specific nation and will cultivate one nation’s history. Only after having had a good understanding of Western history, can China enhance its cooperation with the West. This thesis is selected from Chapter 21 of Western Civilizations, which is written by Judith Coffin and Robert Stacey. They are historians in Western universities. In writing Western Civilizations, they had searched a lot of documents and included some historical documents to make it more concise. Western Civilizations begins with the origins of Western civilizations and covers every development period of Western civilizations. In dealing with Western civilizations, this book covers historical events, figures and ideological trends, combines Western countries’ history development and is well organized. Chapter 21 of this bookis about the revolution in 1848, the unification of Germany andthe unification of Italy, Russian serfdom emancipation, abolitionist movements in England and other countries, Crimean War and Realism. Through reading this chapter, readers can have a better understanding of modern nation building and art trends. This report can be divided into four parts. Part 1 is about the main content of this translation, which are description of translation task and analysis of the source text. While Part 2 introduces to the translation process, which includes preparations and translation theories and strategies and so on. Part 3 gives case studies of the problems that the author has met in translation. Part 4 summarizes the author’s translation.
