The Research Of The Public Art With The Culture Of Yangzhou City

The public art of a city is a centralized reflection of its culture which as the key symbol of the legacy and innovation, inspires the creation of urban public art and represents the public’s recognition and pride of a city or an area. Public art evokes the reflection and awareness of urban culture, while transforming the public space of a city. As a gem on the Grand Canal, Yangzhou has a rich historical culture of 2500 years, which dates back to the year of 486 B.C. when Fuchai of Wu built the Hangou Canal and the Han City. The research on the public art in the urban culture of Yangzhou plays a role in the exploration of public art for the lower-tier historic cities in China.This essay elaborates the origin and status quo of public art in the existing urban culture of Yangzhou, and looks into the issues and solutions during its development by a combination of literature review, social interview, on-site investigation and real-world case analysis. The research in this essay includes the following:(1) looking into the contents and causes of Yangzhou’s urban culture in the dimensions of time and space by ways of analyzing geographic, historical and cultural factors of Yangzhou;(2) investigating from the perspectives of public art form and urban public art distribution of Yangzhou, and exploring how the existing public art is combined with urban culture;(3) with the evaluation and analysis of the real-world cases for 3 typical areas of Yangzhou’s urban public art as a guide, comprehensively assessing the specific areas such as overall planning, construction principles and development scheme in the urban culture of Yangzhou, in order to get insights into possible directions and issues that need more attention for the combination of Yangzhou’s urban public art and its culture.Overall, Yangzhou has witnessed an obvious contradiction in the combination of urban culture and public art, due to its underdeveloped public art, although the city has a rich culture. As a medium and small-sized modern city with a rich legacy, Yangzhou should be based on the ethical tradition and historical heritage,employ modern thinking and advance with the times instead of copying the art forms of domestic and foreign cities, in order to establish a distinct public art of Yangzhou City.
