The “Guang Ling Chao” is one of the masterpieces written by famous novelist Li Han-qiu in Public of China. It describes the social life in Yang Zhou from Opium War to the May 4th Movement eve. This paper, bazed on the “Guang Ling Chao” points out that Yang Zhou is a declining city in the late Qing, through the appearance of the social life in Yang Zhou which was described in the work.This paper is composed of three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclosion. The introduction introduces the relationship not only between Li Hanqiu and Yang Zhou but also between Guang Ling Chao and Yang Zhou, and domestic scholars’ research states on the image of Yang Zhou in Literature.The body mainly divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduced the histroy of Yang Zhou city and briefly discussed about its historical position.On the one hand,Yang Zhou change from “Dongnanfanhuayangzhouqi” to “Pichujiangbeidoudayicheng”, the main reason is the reform of the Qing government and anbandoned grain transportation, which is the aconomic pillar. In addition to, the natural disasters and the war has accelerated the decline of Yang Zhou. On the other hand, the rise of Shang Hai and Zheng Jiang,which became a trading port extently lead to the decline of Yang Zhou.The second chapter analyze the urban space of Yang Zhou such as The Garden, Jiao Chang, Temples and so on. It also analyze the decline of the traditional city space and the invision of the new city space. First, In the 19 th century,garden on the lake in Yangzhou gradually decline, the new gardens almost are residential garden.In the literature the Yangzhou gardens are few, and most of them are residential gardens which is relatively small size. Second, Yang Zhou Jiaochang witnesses every aspect of Yangzhou public activities and records the history of Yang Zhou. Third, The temple of "Guang Ling Chao" mostly were broken, the people lack moral beliefs. Fourth, with the capitalist invasion, opium cause the emergence of a large number of opium dens, adversely affect the appearance of the city of Yangzhou. The third part mainly about Yang Zhou people, analyze Yang Zhou citizen’s identity orientation and their temple, as well as the impact of Yang Zhou fading. "Guang Ling Chao" describes five roles.For example, the merchant class, traditional confucian scholar and modern youth, the opportunist majored revolutionary people, fake monks and false priests, the old woman abide by feudal ethics, the new female for freedom marriage and the prostitutes lacking of talents and the life in idleness. This paper reveals their deep-rooted bad habits, their fates are closely linked with the city, reflecting the end of the Qing Yangzhou.The conclusion concludes that "Guang Ling Chao" describes Yang Zhou in the qing dynasty as the decline of urban image.
