A Case Study Of The Syntactic Linearity Principle In C-E Simultaneous Interpretation

With the development of economic globalization,the demand to broadcast ourselves to all the counties in the world is becoming stronger.Under the guidelines of General Secretary Xi Jinping,China has begun to implement the policy of the Belt and Road.As a necessary link in international exchange,the effect of interpretation is becoming gradually evident.Simultaneous interpretation is the most common form of interpretation in a senior business meeting and international conference,which gradually has become an important subject discussed by countless language learners.As the immediacy of simultaneous interpretation is particularly prominent,the translator has to complete a series of tasks quickly,such as comprehension of the original information,temporary memory,transformation and publication of the meaning,and the syntactic linearity principle enables interpreters to complete a variety of tasks effectively.Therefore,it has become a crucial principle in simultaneous interpretation.Cognitive psychology is a kind of psychological trend and research direction that rose in the west in the middle of 1950s,and it consists of production system,schema theory and so on.Meanwhile,Professor Andersor proposed the significant ACT production system in his book of cognitive structure,and he believes that the memory of human beings could be divided into illustrative memory,working memory and production memory.And all of these theories are connected with the applying processing of syntactic linearity principle,especially in the processing of the segmentation of sentence and the deposition of memory.By general research of the theory,the author found that ACT production system could be combined with the application of syntactic linearity principle in SI for promoting the efficiency of translation.In addition,the theme-rheme theory could assist the application of the technique of sense-group segmentation in syntactic linearity principle.Therefore,this essay combines the theme-rheme theory with ACT production system proposed by professor Andersor,and extract and classify the source language involved in the application of syntactic linearity principle,trying to analyze the application and effects of syntactic linearity principle in C-E conference simultaneous interpretation.Through a case study of simultaneous interpretation of President Xi Jinping's keynote speech at the Bo'ao Forum in 2018,it is found that,in the processing of SI,the interpreter could judge the theme and rheme of the sentence through listening,and then divide the source language into sense-groups.Depending on the ACT production system,the interpreter could judge whether it should be interpreted immediately or adjusted and recombined for completing the mission of C-E conference simultaneous interpretation.And the series of processes are carried out in the illustrative memory,working memory,and production memory.Therefore,using theme-rheme theory to assist the implementation of syntactic linearity principle combined with ACT production system could booster the efficiency of interpretation maximally.
