A Report On E-C Translation Of SHUTDOWN:How Covid Shook The World’s Economy (Chapter 3-4) From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

In 2019,the outbreak of the COVID-19 gradually evolved into a global crisis,affecting the normal life of more than 200 countries and regions.The book SHUTDOWN: How COVID-19 Shook the World’s Economy,published in 2021,mainly describes and comments on the state of the world economy after the outbreak of COVID-19,which can help readers to understand the current control system and management system.It is of historical value to provoke people to think deeply about the impact of the epidemic on the process of economic globalization,global economic development and the reform of the global governance system.Therefore,the translator chooses Chapter 3 and a part of Chapter 4 of the book as the source text for this English-Chinese translation practice.Under the guidance of adaptation theory,the translator tries to solve the problems encountered in translation practice from the perspective of the adaptation of linguistic structural objects and puts forward corresponding solutions.The main problems involve the mistranslation of special terms,the loss of sentence meaning,the loss of logical relations,etc.,which are discussed from the three levels of adaptation at lexical level,adaptation at syntactic level and adaptation at textual level.Through continuous adaptation and selection,free translation is adopted at the lexical level,methods such as changing order,breaking sentences and merging are adopted at the sentence level,and methods such as additional translation and interpretation are adopted at the text level to make the translation more coherent.Through this translation practice,the translator has a deeper understanding of the great impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the world economy,accumulated certain translation experience,understood the guiding role of Adaptation theory in the translation of the economic texts,and solved problems in this translation practice.Finally,it is expected that this report can provide some references for the Chinese translation practice of relevant economic texts.
