The MTI graduation report on a translation practice of the chapter 2-4 of Our Life in China by Helen S.C. Nevius for which there is not a Chinese translation so far. Since the flourishing of the sinology abroad from the late eighties in China, Our Life in China is an important part of sinology abroad, which elicits some cultural significance and historical value of author’s translation practice.The original book is divided into twenty chapters, which reveals the experience in China’s Ningpo, Putoo, Hangchow, Dengchow and other places. This MTI graduation report is concerned the translation of chapter 2-4 which is about 16,000 English characters. There are five chapters in this report. Chapter One introduces the background and purpose of this report and presents a brief introduction to the original book. Chapter Two gives a general introduction to the translation of chapter two to four, analyzing the translation features and the guidirrg principles. Chapter Three discuss the process of text translation including understanding, wording and checking of the translation. Chapter four, as the core section of this report, focuses on the approaches to doing the translation, including names and places references, literal and free translation, words amplification and omission, words formation, division translation and synthesization as well a s passive sentences. A summary is made in the last chapter, concerning the author’s experience and gains, problems and insufficients in the practice.By applying "Three Principles of Translation" by Alexander Fraser Tytler and analyzing examples, the report reproduce the process of translation and provide useful reference for translators who do the same work.
