The translation task----The Forgotten, is the latest best-selling book in New York. Itsauthor is David Baldacci, who is known for his crime fictions and also a star in Americanbest-selling novels. This translation practice report is based on the translation of TheForgotten, to introduce the process of the translation, and discuss the problems and skillsin this translation, and come to a conclusion on this practice. This report has four parts. The first part is the description of the translation task, tointroduce the characteristics of the task and the book, therefore to introduce the principlesof the task which are “Faithfulness, Expressiveness, and Closeness”, and the translatorsought to have strong bilingual ability and professional ethnics to carry out theseprinciples. The second part is the introduction of the preparation and the process of thetranslation, which are the unification the proper nouns and the modification of thetranslation. The modification of the translation requires the translator’s own work and theadvices from my tutor and my classmates. The third part is the analysis of the translation problems through the examples in mytranslation, which are the dialogues, the special terms, and the complicated Englishsentences, and the researches on the ways to solve these problems. The fourth part is the translation methods I used to solve these problems, which arethe negation, the omission, word conversion, free translation and amplification. In thisprocess, the report specifies the translator’s thoughts and experiences。The last part is the conclusion of the translation practice, and I found that totranslate well is not easy. It requires not only a sound language base and good translationskills, but also professional translators’ hard work, carefulness and patience, and I stillhave a long way to go to achieve this target. Moreover, the method we used in ourtranslation should be cautious and express the exact meaning of the original.
