Gao Qingkui is an outstanding actor in the history of Chinese Peking Opera in Laosheng-role, he created "Gao school" art of Peking Opera performing and had a high reputation in the history of Peking Opera during the period of the Republic of China. In 1929, Xu Lingxiao nominated him with Yu Shuyan and Ma Lianliang for the “best three actors” of Chinese Peking Opera in Laosheng-role in <Shih Pao>. Gao Qingkui started his actor career when he was a teenager. Until he quitted the stage because of the voice problem, his active period on the Chinese Peking Opera stage spans more than thirty years during the period of the Republic of China. He has been to many provinces to perform his art, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Henan, Shandong and Nanjing, all over the north and South of China. Gao Qingkui has come to Shanghai to perform for 10 time during the 16 years, which began with his first performance in Shanghai on October 24 th,1919 till the last one in 1935. The frequent number of his coming to Shanghai and the long-term employment on the Shanghai stage are quite rare among the actors who were also performing Laosheng-role in the same age.When make a comprehensive survey about Gao Qingkui’s performing career in Shanghai, with the appearance of his representative repertoire and formation of his characteristics of the performing arts as a symbol, this research divide his performing career in Shanghai into two stages.In the first stage, He played his own brand by performing traditional repertoire of several kinds of other Lao-sheng role and taking part in the several Shanghai style repertoire and provided a variety of a variety of Chinese Peking Opera performance. In the second stage, when Gao Qingkui’s characteristics of the performing arts grown up he played his own brand by performing his unique representative repertoire(new traditional repertoire) on the Shanghai Stage.This research takes Gao Qingkui’s stage performing activities in Shanghai as the study object, collects and sorts the relative information, such as the Theatres, the specific repertoires, the order of repertoires and the comments of his performance in the newspaper at each time. In addition, this research gives a simple analysis on Gao Qingkui’s activities(including the performance on the stage and the daily life off the stage) and gives an intensive study about his performance on Shanghai stage based on the relative information, which is aimed at reducing the scene of Gao Qingkui’s performance on Shanghai stage at that time by consolidating and analyzing the fragmented information. In addition, this research analyzes Gao Qingkui’s whole performing process in Shanghai in culture, history and society aspects and investigates the influence of his personal performance career in Shanghai in the field of daily life.
