A Contrastive Research Of Korean And Chinese Loanwords In A Visit From The Goon Squad

As a vital component of languages, borrowed words are of a wide range of use. Nevertheless, borrowed words are still less studied considering such a wide use. This thesis discusses borrowed words that are’borrowed’from other langu ages in both direct and indirect manners. Language is the most significant symbo 1 of a nation’s culture, while borrowed words are the result of the interchange o f native and foreign cultures. Borrowed words in Chinese and Korean are well-st udied separately in each of the two languages, but there needs a comparison bet ween them. What’s more, the former studies seem to be outdated since there me rely are any study of recent borrowed words. Hence, this thesis focuses on the differences between borrowed words in Korean and Chinese considering word-for mation and semantics. Basing the researches on the American novel A Visit fro m the Goon Squad, its Korean version<(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)> as well as the Chinese v ersion《恶棍来访》, together with materials from the National Institute of the K orean Language, this thesis manages to figure out the differences between borro wed words in Chinese and Korean languages with quantity, word-formation, sema ntics and phonology taken into account, and finally reaches the features of borro wed words in the two languages.Chapter one introduces the purpose and significance of this thesis with a re view of former studies on borrowed words in Korean and Chinese together with their achievements, what’s more, the research object and method are settled.Chapter two begins with a standard for categorization of borrowed words ca tegorizing borrowed words into’the natural borrowed words’and’the unnatural borrowed words’(the foreign word which combine with native language), and’the natural borrowed words’can be further divided into single words and compound s while the’the unnatural borrowed words’into the foreign word which combine with Chinese native language and he foreign word which combine with Korean native language.Chapter three provides a statistic and analysis of borrowed words in<(?)(?)(?) (?)(?)(?)> and《恶棍来访》from the perspectives of number and morphology. In <(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)>, there are 737 borrowed words with 1866 words in total, while in《恶棍来访》,there are 156 borrowed words with 326 words in total. The n umber of borrowed words in Korean version is 6 times of that in Chinese versio n. Among the borrowed words, there are 656’the natural borrowed words’and 86’the unnatural borrowed words’, while in the Chinese version, there are 63’t he natural borrowed words’and 93’the unnatural borrowed words’. Most of bor rowed words in Korean are’the natural borrowed words’while in Chinese are’t he unnatural borrowed words’.Chapter four provides a comparative analysis of borrowed words in Korean and Chinese with quantity, word-formation, semantics and phonology taken into a ccount together with a probe into the reasons for such differences and similaritie s.Chapter five draws conclusions for each former chapters and puts forward s everal questions.
