With the improvement of China’s smart phones and mobile internet technology, people are enjoying the convenience brought by internet technology. At the same time, the internet catchwords appear one after another. Throughout the past three to five years, we can find that most of them are from the hot social events, popular films and TV shows, new commodity trading patterns and foreign languages or letters. Behind the internet catchwords, it also reflect the people’s social psychology, the main national pride and awareness of resource-saving, the determination to fight against corruption, and emotion expression for advocating freedom, etc..The popularity of the internet catchwords indicate the updating and development of society in the era of fast pace with its simplicity and innovation. Due to the wide coverage of the internet technology and the update rate, the internet catchwords have the ability to be produced and derived. Some words are clear, vivid and gradually become stable. Some are parts of people’s daily life. Some are introduced into government report or other representative news media, and even rank into the normal vocabulary lists. However, not all of the internet catchwords can always maintain active. Some of the negative and vulgar words, which do not meet the Chinese standard, are gradually disappearing. In daily life, international students often encounter the internet catchwords. However during teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the study and teaching of the internet catchwords is often ignored. The main problems are the lag of the traditional teaching syllabus, the avoidance of the textbooks and the lack of a unified teaching standard.Through the investigation of the international students’ understanding and exposure to the internet catchwords in China, we find that most of the students are interested in the internet catchwords, but it is almost impossible to learn this kind of words in the classroom. Therefore, through the investigation and analysis, we think that we should set clear criteria for teaching Chinese internet catchwords, and select some practical, standard, positive and profound words and phrases as teaching examples. In classroom teaching, theteaching methods, such as the question answering, the association, the etymology, the induction, the culture introduction and so on, are used to enrich the classroom teaching style, and actively expand the extra-curricular education. At the same time, the teachers introduce the internet catchwords and teach students flexibly in accordance with their aptitude. That would help Chinese language learners to really learn and master the internet catchwords, and finally achieve the goals of improving their Chinese language skills and intercultural communication competence.
