An industry report, released by an authoritative agency on the basis of careful investigation and research, contains analyses of an industry’s current state, and forecast of the industry’s development trend. As a kind of business translation, the Chinese-English translation of industry report, not only can help Chinese enterprises go out and fully integrate into the world, but also can help foreign enterprises better grasp the present situation as well as the future trend of the industry, which is beneficial for our country to better develop business and trade cooperation with other countries. Therefore, the C-E translation of industry report plays a very important role in the foreign trade, and is worthy of deep research.In the present report, taking the C-E translation practice of China’s Tourism Industry Report 2014 as an example, the author introduces the background and summarizes the significance of the translation project, and attempts to demonstrate at the lexical, syntactic, and textual levels the difficulties and challenges arising in the translating process. At the lexical level, these difficulties and challenges include the difficulties in translating the technical words, words with Chinese characteristics, and metaphorical words. At the syntactic level, difficulties are embodied in the translation of long sentences in complex structures, sentences in fixed patterns, and sentences with no subject in China’s Tourism Industry Report 2014. At the textual level, the challenges are presented in dealing with the text structure of China’s Tourism Industry Report 2014, as well as redundancy involved in it. Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation (CT) theory, solutions to the difficulties and challenges are worked out. Through appropriate translation strategies, the translated text is able to accurately convey the original meaning to the target language readers in a smooth and natural way. The directive function of communicative translation as a theory to business translation practice is discussed. In this report, some suggestions are offered, with the hope that the practical experience can be of certain help for the future research as well as translation of industry report, so as to constantly improve the quality of this kind of translation, and deepen the translation study on this kind of document.
