A Report On The Translation Of Thematic Study On The Water Industry As World Heritage

Industrial heritage,as a special part of cultural and natural heritage,has gained wider attention,while water industry heritage is one of the tangible historical memory that matters to the water industry and human development.The water infrastructure from the preindustrial period is relatively well presented in the UNESCO list,nonetheless,the heritage of modern water industry is almost missing.Due to the comparative lack of Chinese texts regrading research on water industry heritage,the chapter ?,“historical development of water infrastructure”,of Thematic Study on the Water Industry as World Heritage released by the official website of TICCIH was selected by the author as translation practice materials.The source text is an English science and technology report,a kind of science and technology text,which can be categorized as informative text according to the standard of text typology proposed by Peter Newmark.Therefore,the author adopted the translation strategy of communicative translation for basis,together with semantic translation for supplementary as theoretical guidance.The translation practice was analyzed from lexical,syntactic and textual level with examples.Amplification and meaning extension were used to better achieve purpose of communication at the lexical level;methods including linear translation,inverse translation and recasting were employed to completely and precisely convey information of the source text to the target readers,and to make the effect of translation on the target readers the same as the effect of source text on the source-text readers to the greatest extent at the syntactic level.The communicative function of text can be realized by reasonable wording according to its internal logic and Chinese expression habits while conveying accurate information of the source text at the textual level.The author learns that Newmark's translation theory has guiding significance for informative texts translation through this translation practice.The translator should consider the difference between source language and target language,so that the translation can be accepted by the target readers and communication can be achieved smoothly.It is expected that this translation report may present some reference information for protection and reuse of China's water industry heritage,and offer some ideas for translation of texts in relation to the water industry filed.
