This paper investigates and analyses teaching system and course curriculum of Chinese Studies major in the University of Botswana. For the purposes of fully understanding the current status of Chinese studies, the teaching conditions, the teachers and courses arrangement we carried out some interview investigation with the teachers, issued out questionnaires to the students, did some comparisons with other foreign languages taught in Botswana, at the same time did a lot of reading on theories concerned with curriculum provision. At the end of analysis, we have made provision of recommendations and suggestions towards the betterment of Chinese studies in the University of Botswana. This paper consists of five chapters:The first chapter explains the basis and the importance of this thesis, the object of study has been defined, completed research methods and summarized the already existing work of other researchers.The second chapter gives an overview of the developments in the teaching methods of Chinese Studies course work in the University of Botswana. This includes the background for setting up a Chinese studies major, Chinese language teaching current status, including future developments. Some analysis of current problems and unsatisfactory areas encountered in the running of the Chinese department.The third chapter is mainly concerned with conducting an investigation on the current status of Chinese studies course curriculum. This chapter has elaborated on the teaching philosophy and basic approach to studies of the University of Botswana, and also clearly stated the fundamental status of course curriculum. Some comparisons with other foreign languages taught in the University of Botswana has been made. An interview survey with the teachers was carried out to understand the challenges faced in the Chinese department.The forth chapter covers two aspects, the first aspect is we did an analysis on the course curriculum of Chinese studies in the University of Botswana, analyzed the problems encountered in teaching because of course curriculum, analyzed the limitations resulting from teachers’ and teaching environment conditions, and analyzed the teaching methods and teaching materials arrangements. The second aspect this paper has attempted to address the issues arising from course curriculum and presents possible suggestions and solutions to improve and optimize Chinese studies teaching.The fifth chapter makes this paper’s conclusion, summarizing the main idea and conclusion, and at the same time also encountered for problems and shortcomings of this paper.
