A Report On The Translation Of Chapter Twelve From The South Pole

The material for this translation report is the twelfth chapter of The South Pole. This chapter records the experience of Captain Amundsen who, with his four team members, eventually arrived at the South Pole by overcoming numerous insurmountable difficulties. This expedition record is very informative, authentic, intellectual and epochal, which offers readers enlightening information, and is of documentation value and social value. Therefore,the present author takes Nida’s functional equivalence theory as guidance to conduct the translation.This report can be divided into four parts, that is, the introduction to translation task and translation process, case analysis and the conclusion, among which the case analysis part is the body of the report. In order to make the translated text achieve the same effect as the original text has on the readers, the translator uses proper translation techniques to transfer and adjust the original text at lexical, syntactic and textual levels. These translation techniques are best exemplified in the third part of the report.Through this translation practice, the translator better understands that translation is not a mere transfer of words and sentences between two languages and that it is quite complicated. Because of the differences between English and Chinese, the translator should improve his/her bilingual ability to be a good messenger.
