This report is based on the author’s experience in Shandong-South Australia Cooperation and Development Forum in May 2015. In this interpreting project, the author, acting as the team leader of Shandong University Interpreting and Translation Team, played multiple roles according to diverse contexts.The report contains five main chapters. The first chapter offers a task description, laying out relevant information about the forum, the clients and direct users, and special challenges this interpreting task entails. The second chapter goes on to recount the preparations done in the long term for building up professional competence and those in the short term for this forum. Following the preliminary work, the theory of context and its influence over interpreting are briefly stated in the third chapter. Then the fourth chapter analyses the author’s choice of different roles in light of context. Examples are presented to illustrate the roles she has played throughout this forum as a language service provider, a co-participant, a mediator and a member of the organizer and the role shift under varying contexts. After her experience in this interpreting activity, the author sums up the clients’ feedback and her own reflections in the fifth chapter. The conclusion stresses that adjusting one’s role in accordance with differing contexts is crucial to ensure a smooth interpreting performance.
