This paper investigated the communication strategies of the Chinese traditional opera outside China based on a case study of The Peony Pavilion (Youth Edition). It was found in this paper that there were some difficulties and obstacles of China’s overseas communication. The spreaders were generally without enough influence power. They did not dig deep into the native cultural and artistic connotations for being unfamiliar with the culture cognition of overseas audience. Transmission channels were mainly in the form of mass communication but the way of new media was ignored. In addition, spreading activities were random without a applicable model, which jointly reduced the effectiveness of the opera spreading abroad. These problems affected the overseas spread of the Chinese traditional opera.Focused on the above problems, this paper analyzed the spreader, content, channels, audience of the case and provided corresponding solutions to promote the overseas communication of traditional Chinese opera. In the context of Chinese culture "going out" strategy, the study helps to develop diverse forms and contents. It also helps to enhance the capacity of overseas culture communication. The author hopes the study of the Chinese traditional opera can help the implementation and development of Chinese cultural output and enhance China’s international communication competence. Suggestions can be applied to other types of overseas communication of Chinese traditional culture, such as cultural diplomacy.
