In recent years, more and more high school graduates go to higher vocational colleges for further study. But the students are of variable quality; their English learning situation is worrying. They do not listen carefully in class and are not willing to participate in teaching activities. Therefore, it’s difficult to carry out the teaching interaction, and unable to realize effective teaching. In fact, effective classroom teaching management plays an extremely important role in the teaching effect. On this basis, this paper selects some students and teachers of Weinan Vocational and Technical College to do the research. Starting from the present situation of English learning of higher vocational college students, this paper focuses on the effectiveness of the current higher vocational English classroom teaching.Firstly, this study defines the concept of effective teaching. It also expounds the conditions for the effective teaching research, both at home and abroad, and analyzes the supporting theories of higher vocational college English classroom teaching effectiveness research, Ausubel’s meaningful reception learning theory, the theory of Babansky’ s teaching optimization and Gardner’s multi-intelligence theory, and the enlightenment of these theories to the study. Then the paper analyzes the current situation of English teaching in higher vocational colleges, by the methods of questionnaire and individual interview, and summarizes the reasons why the higher vocational English teaching efficiency is low, analyzes the problems existing in the current higher vocational English teaching analyzes the problems existing in the current higher vocational English teaching and the deep reasons of these problems. The main causes of low efficiency of English teaching in higher vocational colleges in our country are : students’ basic English level is low and interests in English learning is limited, English teachers’ teaching tasks are heavy, classroom teaching models are not diversified and rational, teachers’ abilities are of great difference, teaching materials are not suitable for higher vocational students, etc. At last, it puts forward ways for improvement of the higher vocational English teaching effectiveness, from multiple perspectives such as teachers’ teaching behavior, teaching model, students’ learning behavior, learning pattern and school environment. Main ideas are: to stimulate students interest in learning and induce positive learning motivation, to enrich classroom teaching modes, to improve teachers’ comprehensive quality, to establish a good relationship between teachers and students, etc.The innovation of this article is that it is based on the theory of effective teaching, combines with the current situation of English teaching in higher vocational colleges and puts forward strategies for the improvement of higher vocational English teaching effectiveness, so it is operable in practical teaching.
