Economic and cultural globalization and our country's entrance intoWTO have set an increasingly high demand on HigherVocational-technical Education (HVTE). According to the BasicRequirements for Higher Vocational-technical Education (HVTE) EnglishCourse issued by China's Ministry of Education in 2000, firstly, practicaltalents should be educated through HVTC English teaching. Secondly, itis important to promote the judicious blend of English teaching and socialdemands. Finally, learners' English performance in practice must beemphasized. The importance of HVTE has been the major focus. However, there exists the "bottle-neck", that is, what graduates fromhigher vocational-technical colleges (HVTC) have learned is not practicalenough in their careers, which has become a public concern. It is worthstudying how to enhance HVTC students' English performance and howto ensure that they will be able to apply their knowledge and skills in theircareers. Therefore, the author carried out an investigation and did anexperiment: implementation of goal-oriented English teaching strategies(GOETS) in the experimental group. This thesis is a formal report of the experimental study. It consists offive chapters. In the first chapter, the author introduces the background ofthe study. The second chapter concentrates on the application of scientifictheories in this study. This study is theoretically based on B. S. Bloom'staxonomy of education objectives. English teaching strategies theory andKrashen's views on second language acquisition also provide us with theoretical support.Chapter Three is the focus of the thesis: the empirical study to verifyour viewpoint, giving a relatively complete description of the study.Eighty-eight students of two classes specializing in accounting in aHVTC where the author works are chosen as the subjects of theclassroom experiment. One class is the experimental group, and the otheris the control group. The study is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the teacher utilized some GOETS to arouse learners' interest andmotivation. In the second stage, accounting in English and relevant skilltraining were introduced and some GOETS were employed by the teacher. We aim to familiarize them with international rules, some widely usedfinancial statements and accounting documents in English. The fourth chapter is an analysis of the results or data of a post-testand a questionnaire. The statistics and results generally conform to thehypotheses, that is, GOETS have effect on HVTC students' motivationand interest, and are more conducive to the development of learners'English performance.Four principles to be followed are provided in the last chapter. Lastly, the author makes some suggestions for future English teaching.
