This thesis aims to translate some excerpts of an English novel named Looking for Alaska and gives a report of translation practice on the original text. The article contains four parts. In the first part, it comes to a simple description of the translation task, which includes the introductions to the original text, the writer of the book and some requirements made by my supervisor. The second part specially describes the translation process, which consists of the preparation before translation, the comprehension and expression during the translation and the proofreading work after translation. The cases study will be given in the third part. Some specific examples will be enumerated in the thesis and the author classifies them into three groups:selections of words’ meaning, sentence process and discourse analysis. By analyzing those examples, the author’s thoughts, translation strategies and skills are all presented very clearly.Meanwhile, a large number of examples are appended after each class of typical examples. The last part gives a summary for the translation, including the reflections and experiences of the author after the translation, the importance of translation theory and skills, and some problems and defects in the process of translating.
