Since the intensifying reform and opening-up, the economy of China has been developing in leaps and bounds, which drives the development of tourism, resulting in an increasing number of foreigners stream into China for sightseeing. Public signs, as an important window of communication and medium of disseminating Chinese cultures, provides great convenience for target readers. As a result, appropriate translation of Chinese public signs become necessary and significant.Eco-translatology is a new theory put forward by Hu Gengshen in recent years. It can be understood as an ecological perspective of translation studies which focuses on the integrity of the ecosystem. By explaining translation phenomena from the perspective of ecological translation in the narrative way of ecological translation, the theory makes a new description and interpretation of the nature of translation, procedures, standards, principles and methods, which play a vital role in translation studies. This thesis aims to discuss translation of public signs in Xi’an from the perspective of eco-translatology, hoping to enhance the translation quality of public signs, strengthen the civilization degree of Xi’an andminimize the confusion of target readers caused by inappropriate translation of public signs, making them further understand the abundant history and culture of Xi’an.This thesis employs a case study, taking the museum commentaries of famous museums in Xi’an as examples and using eco-translatology to guide the translation of museum commentaries. Then comes to the conclusion: before translating, translators should adapt to the translation environment; while translating, translators should be adaptive selection in linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions; After translating, translators tend to resort to a comprehensive evaluation. Finally, some techniques guided by eco-translatology are figured out, that is: addition, abridging translation, synthesization and division.
