Eco-translatology is viewed as an interdisciplinary subject of ecology and translation in the context of global ecologization. It is a home-born translation theory, adopting Darwin’s “Adaptation/Selection” of Evolution theory. It was firstly put forward by Hu Gengshen, a professor of Tsinghua University in 2001. It proposes a new interpretation for the nature, process, criteria and methods of translation process from the aspects of “adaptation” and “selection”. After going through the linguistic turn and cultural turn successively, the translation study goes to anther turn- the ecological turn. The development of Eco-translatology has lasted for more than a decade’s development, and the theory itself is undergoing continuous improvement.Eco-translatology provides a new angle for translation studies. It lays emphasis on the translational holism and views the translational ecosystem as a “harmonious and united” system. Translator is the center of the translation activity in the relationship among the “source text-translator- target text”. The translator also has to shoulder his/her responsibility in the translation process. Furthermore, the translator has to adapt to the translation eco-environment and completes “adaptation” and “selection” in translation activities.Lu Xun dedicated his life to literature translations and creations. He tried to transform the society through introducing advanced thoughts. His “intermediate” consciousness clearly demonstrated his translation purpose. “Hard translation” was Lu Xun’s adaptive selection under the translation eco-environment. From the perspective of improving the translation quality and translator’s responsibility, Lu Xun advocated retranslation and multi-translation. By introducing foreign literatures, China’s translation ecology also evolves.Under the guidance of eco-translatology, this paper is to analyze Lu Xun’s translation thoughts from the perspective of eco-translatology to prove the explaining power in the translation process. The research proves that the interpreting of the Lu Xun’s translation thoughts is completely feasible. Through this discussion, the author proves the following points: Firstly, Eco-translatology provides a new angle, as well as an effective theoretical guidance for the study of Lu Xun’s translation thoughts. Eco-translatology is by no means an isolated translation theory, but an interdisciplinary translation theory based on the eco-holism, oriental Eco-wisdom and TAS as its foundation. There are many links between Lu Xun’s translation thoughts and eco-translatology. The thesis attempts to analyze Lu Xun’s translation thoughts by employing the idea of “harmony and unity”, “translator-centeredness” and “translator’s responsibility”. Secondly, Lu Xun’s translation thoughts reflected his adaptions and selections under the particular translational eco-environment, the translator-centeredness and dominance, the translator’s responsibility in translation process. His translation strategies and methods shifted from free translation to literal translation and then to rigid translation, his advocacy of retranslation and multi-translation fully demonstrated his selection and adaption in the translation process.Exploring Lu Xun’s translation thoughts from the perspective of eco-translatology will contribute not only to a better understanding of Lu Xun’s translation thoughts but also to the justification of interpreting translation in the framework of eco-translatology.
