“Tri-Zhang” refers to three famous writers in the Western Jin Dynasty, Zhang Zai, Zhang Xie and Zhang Kang. This study puts the three brothers together because of their brotherhood and the similarities in their literary thoughts and creative ideas. Zhong Rong comments in Shih-Pin Prefaces that “During the period of Taikang, there have been Zhang Zai, Zhang Xie and Zhang Kang called “Tri-Zhang”, Lu Ji and Lu Yun called “Twi-Lu”, Pan Yue and Pan Ni called “Twi-Pan” and Zuo Si called “Uni-Zuo”. They have all of a sudden rebounded the flourished situation of Jian and inherited King’s footsteps of the previous generation, which represents the lasting literary romantic and the reviving poetry in Jian”, which also represents the activity of literary creation in the Western Jin Dynasty. Statistics show that owing to the turbulence in the period of Taikang, most literati thought life is but a span so that they wrote for fiscal deficit pursuing a luxurious style. These writers were more or less affected by the society, while they got overall higher achievement, especially as Zuosi, Lu Ji and Pan Yue, who injected new vitality in writing styles at the time, representing literature achievement during this period as well. Compared with Zuosi and Lu Ji, Tri-Zhang had smaller effects and was easily overlooked during Taikang period in Western Jin Dynasty. However, Tri-Zhang’s literary creations are worth researching. In Shih-Pin,Zhong Rong evaluated Zhang Xie’s poems as top grade and thought they have a high literary achievement. For Zhong’s point of view, Zhang Zai’s poems were of inferior quality. Virtually from the perspective of the whole history of literature analysis, Zhang Zai’s poems also have their own characteristics. Later scholars do more researches on Zhang Xie than on his two brothers Zhang Zai and Zhang Kang. Overall, “Tri-Zhang” literary studies, although there has been no great progress, but were still involved in most literary history. Previous studies were more dispersed, while this research considers Tri-Zhang as a literary group or family to study literature, which will lead to some new discovery, therefore, this article will draw lessons from ways of family study to spread out the research on “Tri-Zhang”.This paper consists of four parts: Part1: Main concepts of “Tri-Zhang” literary studies are conducted and defined, Tri-Zhang’s status in Taikang history is overall evaluated, Tri-Zhang’s literature research is simply gone over and their research status is analyzed as well.
