| Chinese traditional painting had greatly influenced ancient Korea. Until the early 20 th century, China was not a mere model of Korean painting, but also an example of almost every culture in ancient Korea. There are two reasons why Goryeo painting research is necessary. First, Goryeo dynasty was a period of brisk cultural exchange of painting between ancient Chinese kingdoms and Goryeo. Second, the progress of Joseon landscape painting is also the result of China-Korea cultural exchange in the previous Goryeo dynasty. Therefore, Goryeo period study is one major subject for researching ChinaKorea cultural exchange of painting. Early Joseon Dynasty(1392-1550) is also in range of study, because the early Joseon painting was directly influenced by Goryeo painting.Goryeo society was open, but that of Joseon was closed. Joseon had shut the door against foreign culture, but absorbed only Chinese culture. In this way, Korea traditional painting has two main components: Chinese components and Korean original components. The study of painting in this article focused on landscape painting. In Joseon dynasty period, landscape painting was the major stream of Korean painting. The research methods of this article are textual research and painting research. This article aims to study the cultural exchange of painting between ancient China and Korea, on the basis of ancient textual records. Many art paintings have disappeared, so textual research of the ancient Chinese and Korean records is very important in this article.Goryeo painting is the main research objects, but most Goryeo paintings are lost. So the painting study of this article is not a summary of whole period, but only case study of each painting. From the 10 th to the 14 th century, the exchange of painting works between China and Korea was quite active. People of Goryeo dynasty were especially interested in the culture of the Nothern Song dynasty; therefore, many pieces of Chinese painting and calligraphy were collected by Korean(Goryeo) people during this period. Yuan and Goryeo dynasty had briskly exchanged painting works too. And such close relationship between the two countries influenced the development of Korean painting style. In the 15 th century, Joseon painting had inherited the fruits of previous China-Korea cultural exchange. Early Joseon dynasty, landscape painting had already become the main product of Korean traditional painting. Among the Korean traditional landscape paintings, it is easy to find the influence of Song and Yuan painting style. |
