A Practice Report On The Explanatory Translation Of Chinese News Texts With English Translation Of CCTV News Broadcast As An Example

As the interaction of the western and eastern countries becomes more and more frequent, the need of mutual understanding is increasing day by day. CCTV News Broadcast is a window for other countries to know about Chinese people and society. By means of CCTV News Broadcast, it is possible to accurately and quickly learn about Chinese society and masses. The report is based on the English translation of CCTV News Broadcast from the Eurasia Translation Company in 2014. With the length(20,000 Chinese characters) and the time limit(two months), the task is finished on author’s own. By analyzing the text type, translation process and representative cases, the report explores three aspects in such a small-scale translation projects: how to ensure the quality and speed through pre-translation preparations and time arrangement, how to deal with the translation of words and terms with Chinese cultural characteristics in order to achieve accuracy and readability, and how to do when faced with the expression difference between China and the Western countries.The author presents the goals of the translation task by analyzing the function and the features of the target text and makes a schedule. In the process of translation, it is effective for the words and terms with Chinese characteristics to be translated with explanatory supplement method and explanatory substitution method. Explanatory translation is feasible in some aspects, which solves the problems on the lack of corresponding words and achieves the accuracy and readability. Meantime, the author attaches importance to the expression difference between China and the Western countries, in order to make translation accurate and local.As the report reveals, a translator is supposed to have an all-round understanding of such an inter-lingual and inter-cultural communication, lay stress on every aspects of the translation projects, in order to balance the targets of translation, representation of the source texts, the readers’ expectations and so on.It is expected that the report offers some references and inspiration for the translation of such type of texts.
