Spatial Metaphor Study Of Contemporary Art

"Spatial metaphor" is a new concept which is proposed by Lakoff and Johnson on the field of linguistics in 1980, and later extended to the field of cognitive science. In linguistics, spatial metaphor uses the words spatial orientation and dimensions to express the language of other concepts, from the cognitive perspective, the spatial metaphor is based on the concept of space for the source domain which were to other cognitive domains or the target domain Mapping and then get extended abstract sense cognitive processes. In the field of contemporary painting, in fact, there are many works of art in line with the concept of spatial metaphors, so I borrowed the research of space metaphor in linguistics and cognitive science in the field of contemporary art space in the painting metaphor research. Since the 1980s and 1990s, the era of contemporary art change into the expression of ideas by means of symbols, the space as a very powerful symbolic language is thus get into the vision of contemporary artists and plays an important role. With space mining in contemporary painting in more depth, space has been not only existed as a background, also began as a spiritual expression, social and ideological expression reactants and so on,and it’s more dazzling.Contemporary art as a concept of art, space change into a symbol for political, historical, psychological, social, etc. thus become the spatial metaphor.In this paper, based on spatial metaphor as a breakthrough point, Author in-depth study on the relationship between the space representation and the deep meaning of contemporary paintings.Therefore, the article analyze profoundly the way in four parts: The first part is the interpretation of the meaning of metaphor and specificity of metaphor in contemporary art. From several previous viewpoints concerning metaphor to metaphor contemporary connotation, and then turn to the metaphor of space, analyze spatial metaphor defined in the field of linguistics and cognitive science, in this context bring the introduction of these theories in contemporary painting, and by comparing contemporary painting space art space to traditional painting art distinction, study why contemporary painting art space is called "spatial metaphor".The second part is the analysis of typical type of contemporary painting. Through case studies with distinct characteristics, the artist’s use of the metaphor of space is divided into five different types base on themes from contemporary artists use to express the connotation of space and depth, and strive to better demonstrate the spatial metaphor in the context of contemporary art importance. The third part is the study of contemporary art of painting metaphors conversion mechanism. Study on the operation mechanism of this part is mainly from Dingfang Shu of metaphor, the author will introduced the study into the space of contemporary painting metaphor study, more deeply explore the spatial metaphor in contemporary art of painting how to generate abstract space conversion. The fourth part is the value of spatial metaphors in contemporary painting in discussion, and value of spatial trends in the contemporary art of painting for analysis.
