| Italian great composer Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (1813-1901) is the most influential opera originator in the 19th century. The Un ballo in maschera he cooperated with playwright Antonio-Somma is a three-act tragedy. This is a turning work in Verdi’s opera writing process. In this opera, for the first time he added a comic character inside a tragedy whose name is "Oscar". This great breakthrough had a big effect on his later operas’ comic characters and opera-comiques.The character "Oscar" in Un ballo in maschera is the major research subject in this article. The prolegomenon briefly introduces the reasons for writing and research status. The first chapter is about Verdi’ opera writing process and there is also a basic introduction of the creating background and plot of Un ballo in maschera. The second chapter emphasizes on detailed analysis of Oscar’s role image. The third chapter stresses on the voice characteristics of Oscar and the vocal techniques of his two arias. The second chapter and third chapter are the key point of this article. |
