Giuseppe Verdi (1831 - 1901), the Italian composer, reputes as one of the most important opera composers in the late 19th century Europe. He is remarkably productive and many of his masterpieces have enjoyed great popularity around the world.The years of 1850s witnessed his maturity with opera production and Un ballo in maschera in 1859 is a good example. This paper hopes to approach from two perspectives of lyrics and emotions, and the dramatic styles to provide an overview of musical features in this opera, focusing on the key note episodes by male characters, in particular by two protagonists—Riccardo and Renato. The paper starts with an initial exploration on two crucial male characters and summarizes how the casts have synchronized their singing with a more realistic manifestation of the personalities and characteristics of the roles they are playing.
