| Chinese idiomatic phrases’ structure is simple but rich in content, form short but varied. They are widespread but meanwhile hard in cross-cultural communication. For many foreign students, Chinese idiomatic phrases are very difficult to learn although they are important. The purpose of this article is to break the shackles of traditional teaching of idiomatic phrases, which has no difference from new words teaching and completely depends on the textbooks. According to the class type and teaching needs, teachers make use of the existing context or create indirect context to teach phrases. Placing the phrase in a dynamic context helps students understand the meaning and usage of the idiomatic phrase, in turn, the idiomatic phrase strengthens the context, making the language environment more veritable and living.The article is divided into five parts.The first part is the introduction part, discusses the research background, research methods and research achievements of predecessors. The second part introduces the characteristics of phrases and the concept of context, analysis of the relationship between the context of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and phrases. The third part illustrates the necessity of teaching Chinese idiomatic phrases from the subjective and objective two aspects, through the questionnaire survey and the statistics of the phrases in textbooks. The fourth part summarizes error types in students’ using phrases and causes of errors, specially highlights the function of context in solving these problems. The fifth part is the most important part, this part analyses the characteristics of different types of lessons, and puts forward how to use the context respectively for phrases teaching, and gives suggestions and some real teaching cases as argument. Overall, this paper fully shows its theoretical and practical value. |
