Diversity Of Interpreters’ Role In Construction Site Interpreting

The expansion of globalization and development of China’s energy industry bring more multinational companies and projects in secondary industry. Energy projects account for a large part of it. In this realm projects cooperated by China and other foreign energy tycoons contribute an enormous profit for China’s economy. The collaboration of Chinese and foreign companies on cross-country projects causes a blast of construction site translators and interpreters.Researchers have studied on the features and requirements of construction site interpreting. However, the related researches concentrated on the diversity of interpreters’role in construction site are insufficient. So the author wants to go further study on this area.Interpreting in construction site is different from that in other situations because of the special working environment. Its characteristics define the particularity of construction site interpreting. The author takes her interpreting experience in ChuanDongBei gas project as an example, summerizes three features and requirements respectively.According to these features and requirements, the author finds that the role of interpreters in construction site is not simple as only an interpreter, but also a coordinator and an assistant. The coordinator role is to coordinate work related to other departments, while the assistant role is to assist colleagues to prepare or supplement their administration issues. All of these indicate three properties: subjectivity, coordination, and auxiliary, which will be discussed specifically in this thesis. Therefore, it is recommended that to specify the role diversity can help to improve the study for construction site interpreting, and give proper suggestions for future interpreters hopefully.
