A Report On The Interpreting Task Of Operations In CDB Gas Project

This report is based on the interpreter’s interpreting task from June in 2017 to February in 2019 in CDB Gas Project in cooperation between CNPC(China National Petroleum Corporation)and Chevron Corporation.This project has contributed to the infrastructure and economic development in southwest China,which greatly supports the Chinese government’s development campaign of the western regions.In the light of the Interpreting Comprehension Equation(ICE)by Daniel Gile,this report analyzes the difficulties in site and conference interpreting task in the Operations Department and then offers coping tactics.Comprehension is the most important part in interpreting.According to ICE,comprehension is mainly subject to linguistic knowledge,extralinguistic knowledge and analysis methods.In this report,linguistic knowledge mainly refers to the accent and the vocabulary;extralinguistic knowledge mainly refers to the expertise and the cultural factors;analysis methods mainly refer to the security analysis and the position analysis.Based on the application and guidance of ICE,conclusions are reached as follows.1)In terms of linguistic knowledge,the interpreter gets used to the Indian and Romanian English accent by increasing listening comprehension training of the Indian and Romanian English accents and via getting exposed to Indian and Romanian movies and books.Besides,the interpreter accumulates the daily used vocabulary by frequent communication with the foreign experts in their daily work.2)In terms of extralinguistic knowledge,the interpreter builds up his own expertise by consulting the professional technicians to accumulate his expertise in his routine work.In addition,the interpreter manages to deal with the cultural comprehension issues by studying the cultural differences between China and India and Romania.3)In terms of analysis methods,the interpreter adopts the security analysis to identify the potential hazards in the working conditions,and good preparations are properly done to mitigate hazards.Besides,position analysis is adopted to try to clarify his neutral identity in the process of interpreting.It can be concluded that ICE can effectively guide the engineering interpreting.The report is mainly divided into four chapters.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the interpreting task.Chapter Two analyzes the preparation work before interpreting and introduces Daniel Gile’s Interpreting Comprehension Equation(ICE).Chapter Three discusses the difficulties in the interpreting and offers corresponding solutions.Chapter Four makes a self-evaluation on the basis of client’s assessment.This interpreting report can be used as a reference for engineering interpreting.
