Since translation studies developed into the stage of corpus-based translation studies(CTS), abundant studies related to translation universals(TU) have been made. Explicitation, as one of translation universals, has also attained widespread attention from researchers in this field. In 1986, Blum-Kulka proposed the famous hypothesis of explicitation, which postulates that a rise in the level of cohesive explicitness in the target language(TL) text leads to a TL text which is more redundant than the source language(SL) text. The past two decades have witnessed significant achievements in terms of explicitation. However, after summarizing the previous studies, the author finds that the majority of achievements have been confined to Indo-European languages in the comparison of literary works and relevant studies on Chinese texts are very limited, especially on non-literary texts. As one of cohesive devices, conjunctions reasonably have become a new perspective and focus in conducting studies on explicitation. The author compiles a parallel corpus which includes 30 Chinese listed company profiles with their corresponding English translations and the present study focuses on the investigation of additive, adversative, causal and temporal conjunctions. The number of conjunctions and the types of conversion in each type are calculated by the softwares of Ant Conc3.2.1 and the Snowman Computer Assisted Translation Software(SCATS) 1.13, which aim at testing the explicitation hypothesis and making an explanation to the phenomenon of explicitation in C-E translation of listed company profiles. The present research not only makes contributions to studies on conjunction explicitation, but also provides the guidance and enlightenment for translating listed company profiles.According to the statistics, this thesis finds:(1) The general tendency of conjunction explicitation in C-E translation is apparent after investigating the number of conjunctions and types of conjunction conversions in the parallel corpus.(2) The conjunction explicitation does not exist in all the four types of conjunctions. After the Chi-square test, the phenomenon of conjunction explicitation is not obvious among adversative, causal and temporal conjunctions.(3) With regard to other types of conjunctions, the number of additive conjunctions and conversion of conjunctions in additive are significantly high, which may explain the general tendency of conjunction explicitation in C-E translation.(4) Of all the additive conjunctions, and is the most frequently used one. Meanwhile, in the translation process, the explicitation of and in additive conjunctions is also very obvious.(5)The present research testifies Ke Fei’s(2005)and Huang Libo ’s(2007) studies on factors affecting the explicitation. The findings testify the explicitation hypothesis proposed by Blum-Kulka(1986) and also testify the studies on factors affecting the explicitation made by Ke Fei(2005)and Huang Libo(2007). The author draws the conclusion that linguistic factor, textual factor and translator factor are the main causes leading to the the phenomenon of explicitation in C-E translation of listed company profiles.
