The translation of company profiles is subject to pragmatic translation. It plays acrucial role in a company’s publicizing work. A company profile is expected to be readby potential clients, investors and employees. It works as a tool to stimulate readers toget further information about the company which is introduced. Its text function isdifferent from that of other texts that give information about the company. The former isto be operative, but the latter is to be informative. To be operative makes the translationof company profiles more difficult than that of texts which is related to the company. Forthe mental acceptation of target readers decides whether they are willing to have morefacts about the company, it is necessary to figure out how to make the target readersmentally accept the target text. However, Chinese and English are two languages sharingnothing in common. So do Chinese and western cultures. This requires the translatorto get rid of many cultural obstacles when translating Chinese company profiles intoEnglish. To handle such obstacles, this study employs Geert Hofstede’s CulturalDimensions Theory. Hofstede views people’s value as the core of culture. It alwaysinfluences people’s behavior without being noticed.As linguistic text is one of the results of human action, this study proposes that theValue Dimensions Model of Cultural Dimensions Theory be used to tick out what in thesource text mirrors the value tendency of the source culture. The translator first focuseson things that are pointed out, and then develops the target text according to the valuetendency of the target culture.
